The mountains teach us our place.

BLACKYAK was born in the Himalayas. For decades, these mountains and the people who call them home have shaped who we are. They confront us with nature at its most raw and powerful – and, increasingly, with its vulnerability.

Glaciers are retreating, conditions are changing and destructive floods expose growing risks for mountain communities. At the same time, producing high-performance outdoor equipment creates impacts of its own.

We cannot solve these challenges alone. But there are things we can influence.

SUPPORTING THE ICEFALL DOCTORS

Before mountaineers arrive on Everest, the Icefall Doctors enter the treacherous Khumbu Icefall. They establish and maintain the route across shifting ice and deep crevasses, fixing ropes and ladders while also helping remove waste left by expeditions. As conditions change, their work calls for extraordinary local knowledge, experience and courage.

BLACKYAK supports the Icefall Doctors with equipment for this demanding work.

CONSERVATION & COLLABORATION

BLACKYAK’s commitment to the Himalayas goes back decades – from Clean Up the Mountain, launched in 2009, to earthquake relief and support for a school in Nepal.

In 2025, BLACKYAK co-hosted the Summit for Earth in Kathmandu and helped launch the Himalayan Climate Charter 2025 – a framework for turning awareness into action and protecting one of the world’s most vulnerable mountain regions.

The devastating Nepal–Tibet floods of August 2026 brought the urgency of this work into sharp focus. Better environmental data, satellite and drone monitoring, and climate education can help identify risks earlier and better prepare mountain communities for extreme events. Alongside high-altitude clean-ups and stronger international collaboration, these are key areas of action defined by the Charter.

The initiative also aims to give a stronger voice to those experiencing these changes first-hand – from Sherpas and Icefall Doctors to mountain communities across the region. As BLACKYAK Chairman Kang Tae-sun put it at the summit: “What begins in the Himalayas, reaches the world.”

As a member of the European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA), BLACKYAK also contributes to collective conservation efforts within the outdoor industry.

BETTER MATERIAL CHOICES. GEAR MADE FOR LONG USE.

Extreme conditions leave little room for compromise in performance and protection. Within these requirements, we examine where materials and technologies can reduce specific environmental impacts. Because our responsibility begins with the products we make.

BLACKYAK uses either RDS-certified virgin down or recycled down from RE:Down. Recycled materials are also used in selected fabrics. For new production, BLACKYAK no longer sources materials containing PFAS.

We engineer our equipment for durability and provide repair services to extend its usable life. No single material or technology solves the environmental challenges of high-performance apparel.

These activities do not make BLACKYAK sustainable. They are concrete steps within a much larger challenge. We will continue to examine our products and processes while supporting the people and environments at the heart of our brand – because the future of the mountains is inseparable from the future of BLACKYAK.
